Wade
was born on the Stampede Ranch in Nevada, and spent his early childhood
on a 1.25 million acre ranch that ran 15,000 head of cows and 400
horeses. At a very young age he was roping, moving cows, and working
with the cowboys on the ranch managed by his dad, Martin Black. At age
10, his family moved to Idaho, where they bred, raised, and trained
horses for the public having as many as 50 brood mares, three studs and thirty outside horses in training.
Wade helped his dad start colts, and rodeoed in high school, becoming a state and national high school rodeo contender. Wade earned a rodeo scholarship in Saddle Bronc riding at Montana State University and was a two time National Qualifier. He received a BS in Equine Science, and a MS in Equine Nutrition and Behavior. Wade also taught colt starting classes at MSU for two years.
After graduating college Wade managed his own horse training business having as many as 35 outside colts and five employees. Wade has spent time in Kentucky training racehorses, in Texas training
cutting horses, and at different cow camps in Idaho and Oregon.
Horsemanship is in Wade's blood. He comes from a long line of horsemen,
including his dad, Martin Black, grandfather, Ray Hunt, and uncle, Bill
Van Norman. Wade is the head of the equine program at TVCC, teaching 11 riding classes and two class room classes, as well as the assistant rodeo coach.
Melissa Jayo
Marsing, Idaho
Born and raised in Owyhee County,
Idaho from a basque ranching family, Melissa has been a lifelong student of the
horse. Melissa earned her Associates
Degree in Animal Science at College of Southern Idaho and a Bachelors of
Applied Science Degree in Drafting Technology from Boise State University.
Melissa is currently a committee person for the American Paint Horse
Association Youth Committee and was a National Director for 4 years. She has
been a volunteered as an FFA Parliamentary Procedures.
Melissa has a variety of horse
experiences with a variety of breeds. She worked with Morgan Park horses, trained
and drove race and chariot horses and put herself through college starting and
riding colts for the public. Melissa's
favorite disciplines is the ranch and cow horse and has been showing them for
the last 15 plus years. As a lifelong student of the horse, Melissa continues
to improve and develop her horsemanship skills, by blending a variety of horse
worlds together. Her mentors has been George Dines, Jerry Gorrell, and she
currently rides with Martin Black and Jim Hicks.
She enjoys taking her ranch horses
from the desert to the Branding pen one weekend and learning some dressage
techniques the next week, so she can compete in all the classes at whichever
show she unloads at using the show pen as a gauge to where her horsemanship
needs refinement and correction.
Melissa teaches an evening class called "Fundamentals of Equestrian Skills I, II, and III" and "Building and Stable Management". She is also the stock horse adviser for the Ranch Competitor's Team and practices and competes in the collegiate American Stock Association.

Jack Walker DVM
Weiser Idaho
Jack is the 4th generation of a ranching family in Western Idaho. He received a B.S. degree in Veterinary Science from the University of Idaho where he participated in many organizations including collegiate rodeo and was a National Qualifier in steer wrestling. He received his DVM degree from Colorado State University in 1974, and joined a six person mixed animal practice in Weiser, ID. The Weiser Veterinary Clinic has served as a month-long preceptorship for over 750 senior vet students from vet schools across America and Europe. Jack retired as the senior partner in 2013.
While in practice, Jack was active in many state and national veterinary and cattleman’s associations. He was involved in the formation of several state and national cattle programs through the AVMA, the ICA, the NCBA and the University of Idaho. He was the Idaho delegate to the American Veterinary Medical Association for 11 years and held all of the elective offices in the Idaho Veterinary Medical Association and the Idaho Board of Veterinary Examiners.
Since retirement from full time practice, Jack now has a limited ambulatory practice and has increased his teaching involvement with TVCC. He has taught many individual classes and Adult Ed classes involving veterinary medicine over the last 20 years and in addition to these, now teaches several courses in Equine Health, Equine Reproduction, and Food Animal Health and Disease. He also serves as the veterinary medical consultant for the TVCC Equine Program, and is a long time member of the Agricultural Advisory Board.
